What Is Catfishing?

Catfishing is when a person (the catfish) sets up a false personal profile online for fraudulent or deceptive purposes.

Over the last decade, the dating scene has changed drastically. Online dating sites have grown in popularity. There are hundreds of dating sites and millions of users.
This growth in popularity has also led to growth in catfishing. The dangers posed by catfishing not only includes being tricked into a false relationship but also exposure to extortion, fraud, and cyberbullying.

Reports from Psychology Today show that one in two people exaggerate or lie on their online profile. Another report shows that 54% of people believe the false information presented on online profiles.

Am I Being Catfished?

There are different tricks catfish use to trap their victims. Here are some of them:
  • Incomplete profile or a new profile – catfish have less personal information and fewer photos on their profiles. They refuse to send pictures or send false pictures.
  • The modeling profession – catfish often use a model's photo for their profile picture and then claim to be a model. If the profile seems too good to be true, then it probably is.
  • No webcam – catfish refuse requests to video chat. They may claim to not have access to a webcam.
  • Unable to meet – catfish make plans to meet but back out later. They give various excuses, such as a car accident, illness, or death of a family member.
Hire us to conduct a catfish investigation if you, a friend, or relative is a victim of catfishing. The investigation will include a background check on the suspected catfish.

Is Catfishing Illegal?

It depends on what the catfish does. There is no federal law specifically tailored to the criminalization of catfishing, but it can be prosecuted under other federal laws. Colorado does not have a specific law criminalizing catfishing. However, the state recognizes criminal impersonation as a felony under Colorado Revised Statute 18-5-113 (scroll to the bottom of page 263). This law could be used to prosecute catfishing crimes.
